African Rock Art

Here is a great blog I recently ran across.

Africa may have 200,000 rock-art sites, more than any other continent. The oldest known site, in Namibia, is between 18,000 and 28,000 years old. Several African universities now have programmes to decipher the paintings and carvings. They are being helped by the Kenya-based Trust for African Rock Art (TARA), which seeks to discover and digitally archive as much of the art as it can for future scholars.

Rock Art Research in Oregon 2008

Archaeologists Seek Assistance From Public in Locating Rock Art
For the fourth year in a row, advocational archaeologists D, Russel Micnhimer and LeeAnn Johnston have received a Loring and Loring Grant from the Oregon Archaeological Society to aid with their ongoing efforts to photographically record prehistoric petroglyphs and pictographs throughout the state of Oregon. Basing their explorations on the works of L.S. Cressman and J. Malcolm and Louise Loring, they have visited over one hundred sites. They are now seeking the public’s help in locating sites that may not have been previously surveyed.
Many factors such as vandalism, land development and weathering contribute to the degradation of rock art images, some of which are several thousands of years old. By making an extensive photographic record, Micnhimer and Johnston are helping preserve many of these images for further study. They state that any information, no matter how vague or dated , is helpful. They do not provide exact locations of these sites to the public so as to help protect them. While many sites are located on public lands, permission is obtained from landowners when they are not.
The results of their efforts will be presented to the public and the Oregon Archaeological Society at that organization’s monthly meeting October 7 at OMSI. There is no charge to attend. Micnhimer has also created a website, http://www.oregonrockart.com/, where many of their photographs are displayed.
Anyone wishing to share information may contact Micnhimer directly by telephone, 541 447 7329 or via email TalkingEarth@hotmail.com .
